Larry Fink Analysis
In the photo, the lighting comes from ahead but seems to be more dominate on the left with the bodies showing over exposure there. The photo does show examples of both white and black highlights; whites from the light, darks from the shadow blocking the light. Personally, I feel the photo has a perfect balance between lights and darks that unifies the picture creating it pleasing to look at. The photographer for the most part has almost the whole photo in focus, the fighters especially are in focus which draws the most attention. The point of view of the photo seems to be from above, which makes the viewer feel almost like they were there watching the fight from a high spectator view. When I look at the photo, I feel the photo is asymmetrical because it's not perfectly the same of both sides, but the colors and shapes give the photo unity. Rule of thirds is definitely incorporated into the photo, the fighters not being exactly in the middle. The referee also makes it even more of rule of thirds since once your eyes first see the fighters, it instantly moves to the ref. which is in an obscure spot in the photo. The photo is in a square format which compresses the view, making the viewer focus more toward the fighter on the right side. The ropes are the foreground, the fighters and referee are the mid-ground, and the fighting ring is the background. The symbols on the fighting ring are one example of shape repetition I see in the photo. The arms and legs in the piece convey a sense of motion throughout, leading your eyes to move with the motion of the fighters. I feel the message that is being portrayed is the intensity of mid match, one fighter having a advantage that could help win the match. The feeling of tension and even having the referee in the photo makes a viewer feel alert to what's happening.
Ireland Photo Series
Larry Fink (Ireland) Series
The theme used in this series was "Travel in Unknown" in which I took photos all around Dublin, Ireland. My photos show this by looking at foreign locations in different and more obscure angles. For example the second and third photo (on the top row) have a very mysterious and travel-like look to them. The second one, which shows the people walking away then having a lens flare, then fence and bushes add a pleasing look to the photo. The fence just looks foreign yet looks oddly satisfying to look at.
"I think that my most successful pictures encapsulate a story within one frame that works on many different levels."
This quote I feel most relates to my photo series because of just how one photo can be seen and interpreted in many different ways. A series like this makes you think what the reason for taking a photo the way I did, and what was happening. In all my photos, I feel like there is a good balance between lights and darks. The lighting in the photos make the subjects pop out, creating a good overall composition. All my photos seem to be a perfect in between of exposure, not looking too dark or light, except in the photo with the lens glare. All of my photos are in focus on something specific or overall. Since I was only using an Iphone, I was unable to use any specific utilities a camera is able to use. I used different and more obscure angles on most of my photos, trying to please the eye with the the rule of thirds. Most of my photos lie in the asymmetrical field, not being either really symmetrical or even radial. In my circle photos (in the corners) there is more of a clear focal point, but the others show focus on the overall photo. I have created a sense of depth of field in all my photos except the corner ones. In this photo series, I wanted to convey a sense of travel and mystery. While exploring the city of Dublin, I wanted to show a series in a different way than normal people would look at these and just take a normal photo. Feeling a sense of curiosity walking down the streets, I wanted to show people the way I felt through a one frame series.
